Care Guide
-
Enclosure Size: Provide a 40-gallon breeder tank (minimum 36" x 18" x 16") with front-opening doors to minimize stress.
- Temperature Gradient:
-
-
Basking surface: 94°F – 97°F
-
Warm hide: 90°F – 92°F
-
Cool zone: 70°F – 77°F
- Nighttime minimum: 60°F
- Humidity: Maintain ambient humidity at 30% – 40%, and include a dedicated humid hide (with damp moss or paper towels) at 70% – 80% humidity to assist with shedding.
-
Lighting & Sensitivity: Because leucistic and patternless morphs (such as Murphy Patternless or albino lines) have reduced melanin, they can be more light-sensitive. Use a low-output UVB (UVI 0.5 – 0.7) or gentle lighting, and ensure plenty of shaded retreats and dark hiding spots.
-
Diet & Nutrition: Feed live, gut-loaded insects (such as crickets or discoid roaches) dusted with calcium and multivitamin supplements. Juveniles eat daily, while adults eat every 2 to 3 days.
-
Substrate: Use a safe, naturalistic mix of organic topsoil and play sand (or paper towels for juveniles). Avoid calcium sand and reptile carpet.
Fun Facts
-
The "Murphy Patternless" History: The famous Murphy Patternless morph was first produced in 1991 by Pat Murphy and is a simple recessive trait. Young hatchlings actually start out with spots, which completely fade away as they grow into smooth, patternless adults.
-
Not True Albinos (Usually): Many patternless or leucistic geckos have pale, lavender-gray, or bright yellow bodies, but unlike true albinos, standard Murphy Patternless geckos retain normal, dark eye pigmentation.
-
No Sticky Toes: Unlike house geckos, leopard geckos lack microscopic toe hairs (setae) and have claws instead, meaning they are strictly ground-dwellers and poor vertical climbers.
-
Movable Eyelids: They are part of the family Eublepharidae, which translates to "true eyelids"—making them rare among geckos because they can actually blink and close their eyes while sleeping.
-
Regenerating Tails: If a predator grabs their tail, they can drop it as a distraction escape mechanism and later regrow a stubby, bulbous version.
