Care
-
Enclosure Size: Adults require a vertical tank because they love to climb. A minimum size of 18x18x24 inches (30 gallons) is standard, though an upgraded 18x18x36 is highly recommended for maximum enrichment.
-
Temperature: Keep the enclosure between 72°F and 78°F during the day. They are highly sensitive to overheating; temperatures consistently above 80°F–82°F can cause severe stress or fatality. Heating is usually unnecessary unless your home drops below 65°F–70°F.
-
Humidity & Misting: Maintain a relative humidity level of 50% to 60% during the day, spiking to 70% to 80% at night via daily misting. Use a moisture-retaining substrate like coconut fiber, organic topsoil, or orchid bark to help hold humidity. Always let the tank dry out slightly between misting intervals to prevent mold.
- Diet & Nutrition: Feed a powdered, commercially available Crested Gecko Diet (CGD) mixed with water to a baby-food consistency every other day. You can supplement this once or twice a week with live insects like discoid roaches dusted with Calcium and Vitamin D3.
- Decor: Fill 70% to 80% of the tank with climbing structures, such as cork bark, branches, flexible vines, and fake or live foliage.
Fun Facts
-
The Lazarus Species: Crested geckos were actually thought to be extinct until they were rediscovered in 1994 in New Caledonia following a tropical storm.
-
Built-In Windshield Wipers: Crested geckos do not have eyelids. To keep their eyes clean, moist, and clear of debris, they use their long tongues to lick their eyeballs.
-
Sticky Feet & Tails: They can scale completely smooth surfaces like glass using millions of microscopic hair-like structures on their toe pads called setae. Interestingly, they also have these setae on the tip of their prehensile tail to give them an extra "fifth hand" while jumping through trees.
-
"Frog" Geckos: They are incredible jumpers and will unhesitatingly leap from branch to branch (or right onto your shirt) without checking to see where they will land first.
- One-Time Tail: If a crested gecko drops its tail due to fright or stress, it will never grow back. In the wild, most adult crested geckos are missing their tails (often affectionately called "frogbutts" by keepers).
