Care
-
Enclosure: Start juveniles in a 10- to 20-gallon tank (or jump straight to a 40-gallon breeder with extra clutter). Ground space matters more than height.
-
Temperature Gradient:
-
Warm side/Basking spot: 88°F–92°F (using a thermostat-controlled heat mat or overhead halogen/deep heat projector).
-
Cool side: 70°F–75°F.
-
Humidity & Hides: Keep ambient humidity around 30%–40%. Provide at least three hides: a warm hide, a cool hide, and a humid hide (lined with damp sphagnum moss) to help them shed properly and prevent stuck shed on their toes.
-
Diet & Supplementation:
-
Feed juveniles daily with small live insects (such as discoid roaches, small crickets, or small mealworms) scaled to smaller than the space between their eyes.
-
Dust insects with calcium and multivitamins regularly. Albino morphs like APTOR have sensitive eyes due to lack of dark melanin, so bright, harsh overhead lights or intense UV should be used with caution or low-intensity fixtures.
-
Substrate: Use safe, non-loose liners like paper towels or reptile carpet for young juveniles to prevent impaction.
Fun Facts
-
Eyelids: Unlike most gecko species (which have fixed, transparent scales over their eyes), leopard geckos possess movable eyelids and can actually blink or wink.
-
No Sticky Pads: They lack adhesive toe pads and tiny microscopic hairs (setae) found in geckos like geckos or crested geckos; instead, they have claws and are strictly ground-dwellers.
-
Tail Autotomy: If grabbed by a predator or handled too roughly, they can drop their tail, which keeps wiggling to distract a threat. It grows back, though the regenerated tail looks shorter and bulbous rather than long and segmented.
-
Self-Cleaning Shedders: They shed their skin every few weeks and eat their own shed to recycle nutrients and hide evidence of their presence from wild predators.
- Temperature-Dependent Sex: An egg's incubation temperature determines the baby's sex: warmer temperatures yield males, while cooler temperatures yield females
