-
Enclosure: A minimum 10- to 20-gallon vertical terrarium (or an 18"x18"x24" setup) works well for a pair. Bioactive setups with live plants, a drainage layer, and a clean-up crew (isopods and springtails) are ideal.
-
Temperature: Keep daytime temperatures between 72°F and 78°F (falling to 65°F–70°F at night). Avoid letting the enclosure exceed 80°F–85°F, as they are sensitive to heat.
-
Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels between 80% and 100% through daily misting.
-
Diet: Feed live, appropriately sized insects every 2 to 3 days, such as flightless fruit flies (Drosophila) and springtails, dusted with calcium and vitamin/mineral supplements.
-
Handling: Do not handle them. Their skin is extremely sensitive, and human oils, salts, or chemicals can harm them.
-
Non-toxic in captivity: While wild Bumblebee Dart Frogs store dangerous skin toxins derived from eating specific toxic ants and beetles in the rainforest, captive-bred frogs are completely non-toxic because their diet lacks those alkaloids.
-
Climbing ability: Unlike many frogs, they do not have webbed feet; instead, they have specialized adhesive toe pads that let them climb glass, leaves, and branches with ease.
-
Loud callers: Male Bumblebee Dart Frogs are quite vocal, producing a surprising buzz or trill to attract females and defend their territory.
- Group-friendly: Unlike many other dart frog species that fight aggressively, they are relatively social and can often be housed in pairs or small groups
