Care
-
Enclosure: Start a juvenile in a 10- to 20-gallon tank (or a larger 40-gallon tank right away with plenty of plants and hides so they do not get stressed).
-
Temperature: Provide a temperature gradient. Keep the warm side around 80–90°F and the cool side around 75–80°F. Note that albino geckos have sensitive eyes and skin, and some keepers note they prefer slightly lower maximum heat ranges (under 85–90°F)
-
Humidity: Keep ambient humidity low (30–40%), but always provide a humid hide filled with damp moss or paper towels (at 60–80% humidity) to help them shed properly.
-
Substrate: Use safe, easy-to-clean options for juveniles like paper towels or reptile carpet to prevent accidental ingestion or impaction.
-
Lighting: Offer a low-level UVB light for 10–12 hours a day (though keep it gentle since albinos are light-sensitive).
- Diet: Feed juveniles daily with appropriately sized live insects (such as discoid roaches, small crickets, or mealworms) gut-loaded and dusted with calcium and multivitamins. Albinos may have slightly poorer vision or slower hunting instincts, so tong- or hand-feeding is often helpful
-
Light-Sensitive Eyes: Unlike normal leopard geckos with vertical black slit pupils, albinos lack dark pigment in their eyes, meaning harsh, bright lighting can hurt or irritate them.
-
Eyelids: Unlike most geckos (which have a clear membrane over their eyes and have to lick them clean), leopard geckos possess true, movable eyelids.
-
Fat-Storage Tails: They use their thick tails to store fat reserves; a plump, wide tail means a healthy gecko, while a skinny tail means they are using up stored energy.
-
Drop and Regenerate: If threatened by a predator, they can drop their tail. The tail will wiggle to distract the attacker while the gecko escapes, and it will slowly regenerate over time.
- No Sticky Pads: Unlike crested geckos or house geckos, leopard geckos lack sticky toe pads (setae) and have tiny claws instead, meaning they cannot climb smooth vertical glass walls.
