Animal Selection

-
Enclosure: Minimum 40-gallon tank (or roughly 60 x 45 x 45 cm / 24x18 inches for a single or pair). Use a forest-floor setup with a drainage layer, moisture-retentive substrate (such as a mix of organic topsoil and coconut fiber), and plenty of ground-level hides.
-
Water & Swimming: They love to swim and need a dedicated water section or deep dish (around 1 inch deep or more) where they can easily submerge and exit safely.
-
Temperature: Keep the warm side/basking hide at 80–82°F (27–28°C), cool side at 75–78°F (24–26°C), and night temperatures around 72–75°F (22–24°C).
-
Humidity: Maintain high humidity between 70% and 90% (rising up to 80–100% at night) using daily misting and live plants; they dehydrate very rapidly if kept too dry.
-
Lighting: Provide a 12-hour day/night cycle with low-level supplemental UVB lighting.
-
Diet: Strictly insectivorous. Feed live crickets, roaches, small worms, and other small arthropods dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements.
-
Handling: Minimize handling. They are timid, stress-prone, and view being held as a threat; they are best enjoyed as passive display animals.
Fun Facts
-
Miniature Dinosaurs: They feature four rows of heavily keeled, spiky dorsal scales that look just like a tiny alligator or crocodile.
-
Vocalizations: Unlike most lizards, crocodile skinks can produce a sharp squeak or barking sound when startled or distressed.
-
Playing Dead: When severely threatened or cornered, they may feign death (thanatosis) or drop their tail as a defense mechanism.
- Pale Eye Rims: They earn their common name from the distinct pale-white or cream-colored ring surrounding their eyes.
